A recent thrifting adventure around Portland produced this gem that I had never seen or heard of before. FORE! The Professionals’ Golf Board Game was released in 1990 and by fate or some other force found its way into my direct vicinity 32 years later. I was on the hunt for “golf stuff”, and for $5 there was no way I was leaving the store without this in my possession. It appeared to be in great shape with a lot of the packaging still sealed on the inside of the box. After settling in its new home for a couple weeks, last night it was time to break it out and see what FORE! was all about.
I really wasn’t sure how the good the playability of this game was going to be, but it turns out it’s as fun and frustrating as the real thing! (ok, maybe not, but it’s really enjoyable!) The main element of the game is rolling two dice and depending on what you roll, you move your player forward with different number sequences equalling different shot out-comes. The harder a number is to roll, the better the shot will be. The closer you are to the hole, the easier the number sequence will be to roll. As you can see from the scorecard, Hannah got me by 3 strokes! But there’ll be plenty more opportunities to get my revenge as I see this being a game we pull out of the cupboard many, many times more.
